This class is designed with constant attention on achieving three primary goals. Every assignment, either explicitly or implicitly, are linked to the fulfillment of these distinct, but interrelated goals.
- Analytic/Critical
Thinking – Whether scrutinizing a philosophic or psychological theory or
examining how popular culture is linked to these subjects we will be either in
a state of analysis or preparing to analyze. The expectation is that you will
be able to demonstrate those skills you have honed as a student for the past
eleven years and apply them with focused intensity to your assignments and
discussions.
- Knowledge,
appreciation, and evaluation of philosophy and psychology – this course will,
obviously, focus on philosophy and psychology. Students will be introduced to a
number of psychological theories and works of philosophy, granting the
opportunity to gain knowledge of both and become aware of the symmetrical and
asymmetrical relationship the disciplines share. It is my hope that you gain
appreciation for this unfolding process.
- Myth and the
humanities – This undercurrent of this class will be the concept of evaluating
our humanity by examining not only pop culture but the mythic themes that can
be found imbedded in certain films and movies. It has been said that people are
story telling creatures and we tell stories for purposes beyond entertainment. By studying our stories we can discover the
profound humanness of even the most dramatic figures and we may find ourselves
examining ourselves as well.
